Mocksville, NC – The Davie County Extension and Community Association (ECA) is sponsoring Pillowcase Work Days in support of the Winston-Salem Chapter of Ryan’s Cases for Smiles on Tuesday, October 1, and Wednesday, October 2. The event will be held at the Center United Methodist Church Community Building from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. on both days.
Ryan’s Cases for Smiles (formerly ConKerr Cancer) is a volunteer organization founded in 2007 to bring comfort and support to young patients and their families around the globe. Volunteers create and distribute whimsical pillowcases to children in hospitals to provide an emotional boost and remind them that they are not defined by their illness. Pillowcases made at the Davie workdays will benefit Brenner Children’s Hospital and the Ronald McDonald House of Winston-Salem.
There are many jobs available for volunteers from sewing, cutting and ironing pillowcases to writing notes for the recipients. All pattern information, fabric and thread will be provided. Volunteers are asked to bring equipment to use they have at home, such as sergers, sewing machines, irons, ironing boards, cutting mats, rotary cutters, pins, seam rippers, etc. Snacks and food will be provided throughout the day.
Volunteers can sign up by contacting N.C. Cooperative Extension, Davie County Center, at 336.753.6100. When calling, volunteers will need to indicate the time(s) available to work and the equipment they will bring. The deadline to RSVP is September 23.
Linda Owings, a member of the Davie County Center ECA Club, spearheaded the project when she applied for an ECA Innovative Grant from the N.C. Family and Consumer Science and Extension and Community Association Foundation. This project supports the ECA mission to strengthen families and communities through leadership development, community action and educational support through research-based education from NC State University and NC A&T State University. There are currently four community level ECA clubs in Davie County and new members are welcome anytime.
