Ribbon Cutting and Grand Opening Celebration Planned for New Remote Library Lockers

Davie County Seal

DAVIE COUNTY, NC – A ribbon cutting and grand opening celebration is planned for the new Remote Library Lockers that will provide county library services to residents located in Bermuda Run/East Davie. The event is set for Wednesday, June 1 at 11: 30 am and will be held at the Davidson Davie Community College, Davie Campus - Bermuda Run. The community is invited to attend and will have the opportunity to participate in demonstrations that will help users better understand how the lockers operate.

Background on the Remote Library Lockers Project

Since the summer of 2018, Derrick Wold, director of the Davie County Public Library, has had his sights set on bringing remote lockers to Davie County. He believed these lockers would make the library’s services more accessible to residents who do not have a library in their immediate vicinity, like those in Bermuda Run/East Davie.

With the price tag of these lockers reaching and surpassing $45,000, the Davie County Public Library team began to research ways to fund this project. Derrick and his team applied for, and were awarded, an ADAPTS grant from the State Library of North Carolina for $45,000. The SLNC awards support local library projects that target high-need communities to address digital inclusion, expand digital network access, purchase internet-accessible devices, provide related technical support in response to the coronavirus, and support community needs.

Throughout this process, the Davie County Library was able to work with the Town of Bermuda Run and the Davidson Davie Community College to make this project successful. Additionally, the library worked with GLAST Graphics to wrap the lockers.

“The library is thankful for its partnership with the Town of Bermuda Run and the Davidson Davie Community College (DDCC) in Bermuda Run to house the lockers and provide access to the resources. The lockers will be used to store materials requested by the community, and to also offer a place where materials can be picked up conveniently,” said Wold.

How It Works
Any Davie County Library member will be able to use the lockers.
To do so, reserve your books through the Davie County Public Library website.
The library staff will assign a specific locker that will hold those books on reserve.
Go up to the locker and scan your library card.
The assigned locker door will open and your books will be waiting for you.
Take your receipt so that you know when the books are due back.

What This Brings to the Community
“One of the questions that we get is what does getting a remote locker system do for the community? The answer to this is that it gives us the opportunity to provide a service and show there is a desire and a need to have a physical library presence in the Bermuda Run/East Davie area,” Wold said. “This provides a template to provide service to underserved community members in Davie County.”

”We are very appreciative of Derrick Wold’s proactive initiative to provide extended access of library services to the Bermuda Run/East Davie area. The Town looks forward to partnering with DDCC and the Davie County Public Library to provide volunteers to staff the kiosk area. It’s a great testament to fully leveraging the resources of multiple agencies,” said Lee Rollins, Bermuda Run Town Manager.

The Davie County Public Library is continuing to offer resources and access to those throughout our entire community. The remote lockers will be an added value to the community, bring resources to Bermuda Run/East Davie residents and help to bridge the digital gap that exists within Davie County.
