Davie County Senior Games Scores First Place in the Piedmont Senior Champions Tour!

Bocce Group Photo with Trophy

Davie County Senior Games is one of the most exciting times of the year. Senior Games local games are played in spring followed by the North Carolina State Finals in fall. The Piedmont Senior Champions Tour was created in 2018 to create a regional competition to prepare for the North Carolina State Finals. The Piedmont Senior Champions Tour (PSCT) is comprised of the Davie County Senior Games, Piedmont Plus Senior Games, and Yadkin Valley Senior Games. Since there are three Senior Games teams involved, they each host a sports event at a location local to their games. This year, Davie County hosted Shuffleboard, Piedmont Plus hosted Bocce, and Yadkin Valley hosted Mini Golf. Each Senior Games group brings 12 participants (6 women, 6 men) to play for the championship trophy.

The first day of the PSCT started with Shuffleboard at Bermuda Village on August 31. The weather was gorgeous, and Bermuda Village has the perfect area to set up tents and chairs to cheer on the players. This event was so exciting for Davie County to host because this was a new event for the Yadkin Valley Senior Games players. For this event, players were placed in a pool and played against the other senior games teams. The best part of this event was watching the fellowship during the competition. The players were so glad to help the newcomers and share tips and tricks. During the event, the teams took their own score and turned it into the coordinator at the end. Davie County showed up to win with the ladies sweeping the winning places and taking home an excellent first day score for Davie County. Shuffleboard winners: 1st Place – Roni Barney, 2nd Place – Lois Green, 3rd Place – Peggy Evans.

After Hurricane Ida graced North Carolina with her presence and pushed the PSCT events back by a day, the Mini Golf event was able to take place at Hardy’s Custom Golf in Mount Airy on September 2. This event, hosted by Yadkin Valley Senior Games, was AWESOME because this year was the first year mini golf was defined as a Senior Games event. Like Shuffleboard, the players were put into a pool and played against the other two Senior Games teams. Davie County came to play! In the winner’s category for women, Vanessa Carter took home 2nd place. In the winner’s category for the men, Davie’s Terry Mitchell took home 1st and Bud Stroud took home 2nd. This event put your Davie County Senior Games in the lead!

For the third and final day of the competition, Piedmont Plus Senior Games hosted a Bocce tournament at Miller Park in Winston-Salem. At Miller Park, you will find a line of Bocce courts that allow for several games to be played at once. Bocce is such a serious sport for Piedmont Plus that they had a tournament amongst themselves to decide who would play in the PSCT. Even though the other teams showed great talent and competition, Davie County’s Barbara Chapman and Vanessa Carter placed in the top two spots for women, winning the final event for Davie County Senior Games!

With the wins at Shuffleboard, Mini Golf, and Bocce, Davie County Senior Games was able to take home the trophy and keep it until next year’s season. You don’t want to miss out on this fun! The participants in the PSCT said that they enjoyed the competition just as much as they enjoy the NC State Finals. This event is a time of fellowship and fun, making new friends, and enjoying the competitive spirit close to home.
