A century after the First World War inflicted conflict across the modern world, we will look at how artists on both sides struggled to understand the meaning of the catastrophe. In only four years (1914-18), the war touched every corner of the globe, including Davie County, causing as many as thirty-eight million military casualties, including ten million dead, and uncounted civilian losses in the greatest suffering until the Second World War. Those internationally important artists in painting and sculpture include Americans John Singer Sargent and Horace Pippin, Brits Paul Nash and Stanley Spencer, and Germans Otto Dix and Käthe Kollwitz.
